Bhel Puri

Bhel puri is a popular Indian street food that is made with puffed rice, potato, onion, tomato mixed with sweet, tangy and spicy chutneys and sev along with spice powders. The chutney’s are inevitable and make the dish more tasty.

It’s almost everyone’s favourite and can be made easily to have a great evening snack.

Ingredients (Serves 3)

Preparation time – 20 mins
Cooking time – 10 mins
  • Puffed rice – 2 cups
  • Onion – 2, chopped
  • Tomato – 1, chopped
  • Boiled potatoes – 2, mashed
  • Red chilli powder – 1/4 tsp
  • Chaat masala – 1/4 tsp
  • Roasted peanuts – 1/4 cup
  • Papdi – as needed, optional
  • Lime juice – 1 tbsp
  • Coriander leaves – 3 tbsp
For Tamarind Chutney
  • Tamarind – lemon sized
  • Dates – 15, deseeded
  • Chaat masala – 1 tsp
  • Cumin powder – 1/2 tsp
  • Red chilli – 1/2 tsp
  • Brown sugar – 1 tsp
  • Salt – as required
For Spicy Red Chutney
  • Biyadgi Red chillies – 8
  • Garlic – 4
  • Salt – as required


  • To prepare the tamarind chutney, pressure cook the dates and tamarind with little water.
  • Switch off and cool them. Add them to blender and blend them smooth.
  • Filter the mixture well.
  • Boil the mixture for 6 mins. Add the spices to it.
  • Switch off the flame and let it cool.
  • You can store in refrigerator for 15 days.
  • To prepare the red chutney, soak the red chillies in hot water for 15 mins.
  • Grind it along with salt and water to a smooth paste.
  • Refer this recipe for green chutney preparation.
  • Add onion, tomato in a large bowl.
  • Add the boiled poataoes, spices, sev and roasted peanuts. Add the green chutney on top.
  • Add the spicy red chutney.
  • Add the tamarind chutney.
  • Add the puffed rice.
  • Add broken papdi, coriander leaves, lime juice and serve.
